Precision and accuracy of staged free-energy perturbation methods for computing the chemical potential by molecular simulation

چکیده
We examine the performance of free-energy perturbation methods when applied to compute the chemical potential of the Lennard–Jones model by Monte Carlo simulation. We emphasize the accuracy and precision of various implementations of the methodology, particularly in the context of the relative effectiveness of ‘insertion’ vs. ‘deletion’ approaches. The study is limited to a single state point and system size. In accord with recent arguments made in the context of the hard-sphere model, we find that any singleor multi-stage approach that incorporates a ‘deletion’ component shows greatly diminished accuracy and precision when compared to its ‘insertion’ counterpart. We also confirm our earlier conjecture that the entropy rather than the free energy is the important quantity to examine when formulating optimal multistage free-energy perturbation schemes. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Quantitative comparison and optimization of methods for evaluating the chemical potential by molecular simulation
The precision of several methods for computing the chemical potential by molecular simulation is investigated. The study does not apply molecular simulation to the analysis but instead works with models of the simulation process. These models enable the variance of the chemical potential to be computed accurately and very quickly and thereby permits the methods (freeenergy perturbation, expande...
متن کاملAccuracy of free-energy perturbation calculations in molecular simulation. II. Heuristics
We examine issues involved in applying and interpreting free-energy perturbation ~FEP! calculations in molecular simulation, with the aim to develop simple heuristics that can guide their use and warn when a result is likely to be inaccurate. We build on the accuracy model developed in the first paper of this series @N. Lu and D. A. Kofke, J. Chem. Phys. 114, 7303 ~2001!#, which emphasized the ...
متن کاملCalculation of surface tension via area sampling.
We examine the performance of several molecular simulation techniques aimed at evaluation of the surface tension through its thermodynamic definition. For all methods explored, the surface tension is calculated by approximating the change in Helmholtz free energy associated with a change in interfacial area through simulation of a liquid slab at constant particle number, volume, and temperature...
متن کاملAppropriate methods to combine forward and reverse free-energy perturbation averages
We consider the accuracy of several methods for combining forward and reverse free-energy perturbation averages for two systems ~labeled 0 and 1!. The practice of direct averaging of these measurements is argued as not reliable. Instead, methods are considered of the form b(A12A0) 52ln@^w(u)exp(2bu/2)&0 /^w(u)exp(1bu/2)&1# , where A is the free energy, b51/kT is the reciprocal temperature, u5U1...
